AUGUST 2003 Newsletter

August Match: It was hot. Hot enough to cook your coconut. As mine slowly roasted I could see from the number of mistakes being made I was not alone. I don’t know how those Arizona members do it. They must have air-conditioned hats or something. Pete who is nearly always immune to mistake epidemics won the match by an airy 8 seconds, taking two stage wins. Ron W. won a stage and placed second. Bob cruised along consistently, taking third. Cedric took the limited division convincingly with Richard at second. In what can only be described as a cruel twist of fate, Dan, who through out the day never missed an opportunity for a spectacular crash and burn took a stage win on the classifier. Welcome to fist time attendee John Cowles. The “hard way” award goes to Gregg who suffered a misfire rate of about 50%. How much you want to bet he has that fixed by next match. The stages: Claim Jumpers; Use the shovel you start with to knock down the three near poppers then engage the 7 paper two rounds and remaining 3 steel to fall. Decelerate; three large rectangle plates at 10yrds. Three paper at 15. Two 12” plates at 20 and a third at 25yrds. One round on the steel and two on the paper. Strangely, from the shooters box, all targets appeared the same distance. Wheel of Misfortune; Two racks of five steel and between them the debut of the “Texas Shooting Star”. A five armed rotating frame to which falling plates are attached. As the plates fall its motion changes. Difficult yes, but it seems many shooters let the intimidation factor get the better, even so, quite fun. Speed Only (CS00-04); Five paper at 18ft. First string, freestyle one round each. Second string, one round each strong hand. Third string, one round each weak hand.

Club Match: The next club match on September 13th will be the ICORE Postal. A chance to see how you compare with lot’s of other ICORE members all shooting the same match. The October 11th stages are called for by Ron J. The November 8th stages are being done by Ron W., Rich, Heeday and Richard. For a detailed list of the whole year go here.

IRC Update: The mentions of Wheelburners at the IRC in last month’s news curiously overlooked class places. To rectify: Juan 2nd Open A, Derek 3rd Open A, Ron W. 3rd Open B, Art 2nd Open C. That’s as deep as I could go before my eyes started hurting.

More Shooting: Here’s some info on other South CA revolver matches. Hidden Valley Revolver Club (HVRC) ICORE match on the 4th Sat. at the Escondido Fish and Game (EFG) Assn.
