March 2004 Newsletter

March Match: Derek and Pete took the twenty one shooters on a walk back in time to some stages seen at early IRC’s. As we found out, steel and big round counts, as well as fun were a feature of the early matches. Derek won the match with a nice run on F&N to win that stage as well. Dan won the stock division placing second overall. Pete at third won the classifier and stage 2. Mike T. trying out an open gun won stage 5 at fourth overall. Cedric won stage 4. Keep an eye on Nelson and Rob. They both seem to be shooting well though with a stumble here or there. Welcome to Rich Molony attending his first Wheelburner match. The stages: Not Jeff’s Prez 2 (CS-001); Three groups of two stacked targets at fifteen yards out with nine feet between each. Engage each one round, reload and engage each one round then do it once more. Stage 2; Three dropping plates left at 7 yrds. A big rectangle center at 20 yrds and a dropping stop plate right at ten yrds. Five strings, best four count. Far & Near; The one you love to hate. Stage 4; A five plate rack left with box B set about 10 yrds back. A five plate rack right with box C 10 yrds back. Box A center about 15 yrds back. Start in box A, move to a forward box, engage the rack then move to the other box and engage the rack. Repeat but go to the other box first. Stage 5; Ten12in plates set up in an intimidating array from seven to fifteen yards. Two papers at 25 yrds with a stop plate between them. Engage the steel one round, the paper two rounds. Two strings.

Club Match: The next club match will be on April 10th. The April match will feature four classifiers and Far & Near. Enough to be classified for the big matches of summer in one fell swoop. Now is your chance to bring out that second gun or make up for a missing classifier. The May match will be May 1st. That’s two weekends earlier then our normal match date. The SWRRC was rescheduled to the third May weekend. The Northrop Grumman Pistol Club Aerosteel match was scheduled for that weekend as well. A commonality of officers and shooters exits between Wheelburners and NGPC. That bumped the NGPC Aerosteel match to the second Saturday and that bumped our club match to the first Saturday.

Stage Set Up Tips: These words of wisdom from Cedric… Now that you’ve designed and set up your stage take a few minutes to walk through it. Remember not everyone will engage the targets from the same positions you will, so imagine engaging the targets from different locations. Make sure there aren’t any shoot throughs that will hit other targets, target stands, props or unused equipment laying against the berms. When setting up paper targets, the ones with a painted back are to be used as no-shoots or hard cover only. Please don’t use them as scoring targets.
